Every day I receive numerous e-mails from people wanting to know what it's like to live my life. They want to know more about what I do, how I do it, how I got to where I am, and what I experienced on my journey. They also want to know more about my day-to-day life and experiences, and I believe some people are simply curious if this job is romantic like they may imagine it being. Mainly I believe they want to know what it feels like to see the things I present in this blog.
Like most photojournalists and documentary photographers, I have been hesitant to talk much about my personal experiences up until this point because I don't want to make myself part of the story. My job is to document the lives of others and tell their stories to the world, giving a voice to those who would not have one otherwise.
While my focus will always be to present my readers with images that inform and inspire them, making them more aware of the world around them and what others live through day in and day out, I understand that people are curious to know what drives people like me go into potentially dangerous situations to tell the stories of strangers. My job is quite unique and many people really don't understand what it is like for me to do what I do. I also very much want to remind people that this job is not for everyone; it changes you and effects your life in ways you could not imagine when you begin on your path. It can be painful for both you and those who care about you.
I have decided to begin a new section on this blog titled "My Life." In it I will provide a look into my personal life and experiences as a photojournalist and war photographer. I'll try to be as open as possible, talking about the really difficult things I experience as well as the truly incredible things that make this such an amazingly unique job and life path.
My hope is that this new section will provide you with a unique look into my life and my world, and in turn, will keep you continually viewing the stories I present and prompt you to learn about the subjects I document. I look forward to sharing my life with you and hope you find it meaningful.
Post Script: The important events and issues I cover aren't always the subjects that sell to corporate media. These human stories need your support and funding to be told. The cost to produce this work is substantial and I can not continue to do this without your support. Please consider a subscription of $25 per month to help insure I can continue my work:
