It's early in the morning and i have just woken up on a partially deflated air mattress on the floor of a TV studio in Brussels, Belgium. Actually, to be fair, the air mattress has performed quite well and still holds the majority of its air. It now seems to be the standard to provide air mattresses to travelers and often they can be quite horrible. It is not at all uncommon to wake up in the middle of the night, centered on your mattress but also touching the floor. I feel like if I could see myself from above I must look like a hot dog nestled in its bun.
I am here for the weekend to visit my friend Anna Moya who is a Bulgarian TV news correspondent, now working for an Iranian station and covering the European Commission from here in Brussels. I met Anna a year ago when she she was working with a Russian news station and flew out to interview me about Iraq. We instantly became close friends and appears we may be neighbors now, assuming I can make living in Paris work and she stays in Brussels for more than a couple of months.
It has been a nice weekend so far. I have taken a bit of break from e-mails, which I know I will regret later when I am bogged down, but the 50-300 e-mails I get every day of the year has become a huge burden and I really need a mental break from it.
Although Brussels is a wonderful city and we have spent a fair amount of time walking, exploring and picnicking, most of our time has been spent in the TV studio watching documentaries and discussing projects. It's a nice mix of work, research and friendship, and Anna is hatching a plan to do a full length documentary on my work in the coming years, which takes talking and planning.

If you've got some free time and if you like medieval cities, Leuven is definitely worth a visit. It's small, but really nice and it's only 20km from Brussels. Of course, Bruges and Ghent are also worth a visit, but they are a little bit further.
