In this segment, Ira Glass talks about good taste and the gap between what we want to produce and what we actually are able to produce when we are starting out. I think this is a great lesson for students in any field and can be summed up by saying that we are all terrible at what we do when we begin, even those who turn out to be the best of the best. What separates the best from the rest is the fact that one chooses to keep fighting, keep working non-stop and not give up while the other assumes they are not meant to do what they are doing and gives up. Do not quit in the phase when your work does not live up to the standards on which you judge others work!
Instead of quitting, do a huge volume of work and put yourself on deadlines, work as if your livelihood depends on it and as if you were working with the best publication or agent in the world. Push yourself, and when you feel like you have pushed yourself to the limit, keep on pushing. My first year shooting professionally I shot more than 120,000 images and nearly every hour of every day was spent studying, researching and practicing this art. I took hundreds of pictures and every day reviewed my work on my laptop at night, trying to learn from what I had done right and what I had done wrong. I gave myself stories and projects and followed through on them. It's interesting because my work style remains very much the same to this day (at least it still takes as much time and effort as it did in the beginning, but you are rewarded more over time).
