Actress and model Zoe D'Amato merged with an image of a bombing victim in Iraq's infamous "Baghdad ER."
Designed to bring light to social and humanitarian issues by combining images of fashion and celebrities with images of conflict, crisis and disaster, this "negative sandwich" features an x-ray from Iraq's bloodiest emergency room, the infamous Baghdad ER. The x-ray belongs to a U.S. soldier who was injured when a roadside bomb or possibly a rocket-propelled grenade hit his vehicle, causing severe damage to his arm. Upon arrival at Baghdad ER, his arm was x-rayed to show doctors damage to his bones as well as any shrapnel that they would need to remove. The white flakes near D'Amato's right shoulder blade are pieces of shrapnel that appeared in the x-ray.

I really like this idea. One of my favorite things in photography is contrast, and this series is all about that in an extreme way. It takes two things that seem to have absolutely NOTHING in common, and in fact are almost opposites in a way, and it combines them into one art form. Interesting, unique idea...I like it a lot.

OK, now I get it.
The previous "war meets fashion" image you shared was a fine shot of the model -- lovely, in fact -- but the "war" half was too indistinct, for me -- it wasn't clear what I looking at.
But this image is... amazing... disturbing... [insert additional glowing adjectives here]. I'm very impressed.
Excellent work. Bravo!
PS: Is it just me, or does the "bone" layer give her a feline appearance? Specifically, I see a leopard.

Zoriah: I've followed your work for a long time, and I've always been impressed by your ability to take stunning photographs in the most demanding of situations. Not only are you there in those situations (which is more than most people can claim), but you are able to keep your head and actually enter further into the situation AND figure out all the technical adjustments you need to make in order to create the image that you want. You are an incredible photographer. You've likely reached your 10,000 hours, as Malcolm Gladwell would say.
That being said, I am newly impressed by this series. While I have always known that you were good in the moment, it surprises and delights me to find that you are also good at sitting down and producing something in a more deliberate fashion. You are not merely a photographer, you are an artist.
