These are photographs of animals waiting to be adopted in the St. Bernard Perish SPCA shelter. Animal shelters in areas affected by the oil spill have been overflowing with new animals since the disaster. Many relying on the fishing industry are giving up family pets for fear of being unable to care for them. Some of the shelters have seen so many new animals, several hundred percent more per day than their average, that they have had to put many animals down do to lack of space.
If you would like to adopt an animal from this area, please visit this website or contact the Louisiana SPCA directly for more information. Animals are currently being shipped worldwide for those who are willing to adopt. You can also donate money to the shelter to help them care for the animals.
