Empathy is an extremely important subject for photojournalists to understand. I might go so far as to say that photojournalism is empathy, enabled by art. We use images to try to get our audience to understand what people living under very different circumstances are experiencing. When photographers say that they want people to look at their images and feel something (whether it be sadness, joy, fear, anger etc,) that emotion will come from their empathy for the subject of the image.
Sam Richards is a wonderful teacher and speaker and in this truly great TED talk he not only defines empathy but also presents us with real world ways of understanding it. I think this is a must watch video for anyone, especially if you are thinking of becoming a photojournalist.

This is one of the most wonderful talks I've heard! Fantastic, it is!
If only it could be screened in every school, everywhere. The world would grow differently, that way.
As an Indian, I've seen so much rage against Pakistan and against the terrorists in Kashmir. I don't endorse violence. I never will. But I admit that in India, while there are national heroes (who did not endorse violence) like Gandhi, there are other national heroes, respected and worshiped (like Bhagat Singh or Netaji Subhash Bose) who were, in the eyes of the British government in pre-Independence India, 'terrorists'! The thing in Kashmir is the same thing. This talk will help spread peace. If only it could have been screened on national television in India and every other corner of the world...
At the end of the day, we all want to live in peace with our loved ones. And Sam Richards can help us all live that way.
Peace!

Empathy does not have to be confined to sad and uncomfortable situations. It is a great tool to have and share when others experience success and happiness.People can develop empathy and if you believe that you have mediocre or poor skills in this area, you should know that you can improve them.

Really enjoyed this video. It's something everyone should do, put yourself in the shoes of others. I try to do that each time I write a story or take a photo. Thanks Sam Richards for this powerful message.
