Lectures
- Public Presentations and LecturesZoriah has begun to devote a portion of each year to lecturing and presenting to universities, institutions and at political events. For universities, a typical itinerary consists of two days of presentations to multiple departments followed by a public, multi-departmental lecture. The presentations can be tailored in length and subject matter to each department and the multidepartmental lecture currently consist of a thirty minute slideshow showcasing recent work from Iraq, Afghanistan, Lebanon, Palestine, the Asian Earthquake and the Tsunami. The lecture touches on many subjects including the art of visual storytelling, the current state of the media and my own thoughts on documenting life in conflict. Lectures can be tailored to the need of each individual organization, university or event.

Iraq Detainee - US Marine Corps Anbar Province

A young man is held in a make-shift detainment facility in a small Marine Corps outpost in Anbar Province. Marines detained the boy during a security patrol when his name matched a suspect list. Although the list states the suspects age as 50+ and many Iraqi's share the same or similar names, they took the boy into custody to be safe. As I snap pictures the boy asks why he is being held in broken English. The press is forbidden to speak with or interview detainees and even taking photos such as these is not allowed by most units.

After several hours on the floor he is led out of the room and loaded onto a truck which will transport him to a larger base for processing and further questioning. Although the U.S. Military ends up releasing the vast majority of detainees due to lack of evidence, it is a traumatic experience for them and their families. Young soldiers and Marines often treat them as if they are guilty and families fear that the worst when one of the members does not return home at night or vanishes for days or weeks without any notification. It is a flawed system in the campaign to win the hearts and minds of the Iraqi people.

Living in Armored Vehicles

The vast majority of my time in Iraq has been spent in vehicle convoys. Often packed in with supplies, munitions and other soldiers, it is an uncomfortable form of transportation, especially for five, ten or more hours daily. Soldiers and Marines spend as much as seven days a week in these cramped conditions, often wondering when the wheels may come in contact with a roadside bomb.
As a photographer, you look out the windows and see the images passing by, unable to capture them in a way that does them any justice..
