Lectures

  • Public Presentations and Lectures
    Zoriah has begun to devote a portion of each year to lecturing and presenting to universities, institutions and at political events. For universities, a typical itinerary consists of two days of presentations to multiple departments followed by a public, multi-departmental lecture. The presentations can be tailored in length and subject matter to each department and the multidepartmental lecture currently consist of a thirty minute slideshow showcasing recent work from Iraq, Afghanistan, Lebanon, Palestine, the Asian Earthquake and the Tsunami. The lecture touches on many subjects including the art of visual storytelling, the current state of the media and my own thoughts on documenting life in conflict. Lectures can be tailored to the need of each individual organization, university or event.

    Fossil Fuel Impact. Document car culture and its effects on the environment in one of the worlds most polluted cites, Mexico City.
  • Israel and Palestine:
    Compare and contrast life in Jerusalem and life in the West Bank city or Ramallah.
  • Indonesia:
    Child Drug Addicts. Photograph the lives of children addicted to inhalants.
  • Morocco:
    Travel Photography. Travel from Cassablanca to Marakesh and produce a travel related photo series.

    Poverty's Environmental Impact: Work in urban slums to show the impact of poverty on the ocean and environment.

    Palestinian Refugees. Spend time photographing the lives of Palestinian refugees living in camps around the country.

    Shanty Towns. Documenting life in extreme poverty.

    Modernizing an Ancient Culture. Document how modernization and progress effect an ancient culture in the amazing city of Shanghai.

    Beggars life. Spend one week documenting the life of homeless or "untouchable" man or woman.

    Working in Extreme Conditions. This workshop is designed to give higher-level students a chance to experience work under adverse conditions.

    Comparing urban and rural poverty. Students spend half the workshop photographing in Saigon and the other half in Chau Doc or another small village.

As far as I can tell, one of the main duties of the blogger is to waste time online filtering through a bunch of garbage so that your readers dont have to.  I have not had a lot of access to internet the past few months in the field, but now that I do, I plan on doing a bit more of this.  I am starting out with some resources so you can find some other great photography blogs and photojournalism blogs on the internet.

G.M.B Akash - Ship Breaking in Pakistan

Congratulations to Zoriah.net contributor G.M.B Akash for winning the prestigious Travel Photographer of the Year award.  Since his last post here, Akash has been busy with a cover story for  Geo, a cover photo on the Guardian and as usual, winning more awards than anyone I know.  I am very pleased to present Akash's recent, award winning work on Ship Breaking in Pakistan.


From Akash:

Ships are purchased and then demolished in ship breaking yards and sent to steel re-rolling mills for reuse as raw material for production of steel. Currently, the international ship demolition market is centered on the Indian subcontinent, while a large number of tankers find their way to scrap yards in Pakistan and Bangladesh,

The workers in Gaddani, Pakistan are mostly Pashtu people from the Northern Territories close to the Afghan border.  They are seasonal workers, spending the other part of their time working as farmers in their homelands.  They are quite poor and what you would call fundamentalists in their Islamic believes.  They are hard workers, tall, strong, and proud yet  soft spoken.

Zoriah Wins Grand Prize, PhotoPhilanthropy Activist Award for Photography - Famine in Kenya

I am happy to announce that I have recently won the grand prize in the PhotoPhilanthropy Activist Awards for my work documenting the Kenian Famine.  For those of you that are not yet aware of PhotoPhilanthropy please follow the link and enjoy all the wonderful work they showcase.  I usually do not spend my time and money entering contests, but since PhotoPhilanthropy does not charge photographers to enter photographs and has a really wonderful mission statement, it was the one and only contest I entered in this year.

From PhotoPhilanthropy:

PhotoPhilanthropy received 219 photo stories from 187 photographers residing in 30 countries around the world.  "(Zoriah's) work stood out for its beauty, story telling and image quality.  Each and every one of (his) photos came together to beautifully capture the essence of the story and depict the subject in a way that is honest and inspirational." 



I would like to thank all of the refugees who are pictured in this photo series, and the millions who are not.  I hope this work will do something to alleviate your suffering or prevent these situations from happening to others in the future.  My thanks to the IRC for their work to help mitigate the suffering of refugees and for granting me access and logistical support to do my work in their camps.
