Oil Spills - Animal Effects Beyond Direct Exposure

These are photographs of animals waiting to be adopted in the St. Bernard Perish SPCA shelter.  Animal shelters in areas affected by the oil spill have been overflowing with new animals since the disaster.  Many relying on the fishing industry are giving up family pets for fear of being unable to care for them.  Some of the shelters have seen so many new animals, several hundred percent more per day than their average, that they have had to put many animals down do to lack of space.  

If you would like to adopt an animal from this area, please visit this website or contact the Louisiana SPCA directly for more information.  Animals are currently being shipped worldwide for those who are willing to adopt.  You can also donate money to the shelter to help them care for the animals.

 

 

 

 

 

 

Where To Print Photos - Fine Art Photography Printing and Master Print Makers

I get a lot of questions from people wondering where I have my exhibition prints made, so I might as well address it here.  While I sometimes get in a bind and have to have a few prints made at a local "pro" printing shop, anything serious goes to Ron Landucci at Infinite Editions.  The work is truly exceptional and Ron lives up to his title of Master Printmaker.  Most of us know that getting black and white prints from nearly any and every lab yields quite poor results.  If they came out sepia toned it would be one thing, but black and white images with cyan, blue, green and purple hues look just horrible.  Printing is truly an art form and there is so much to learn about it.  Most of us, including myself, just don't have the time.  And even if we did, we would probably rather go out and shoot than fiddle with a printer and calibration and all of the other drama involved with trying to print your own work.  What I am trying to say here is just forget it and find a printer you can have a good relationship with and will get to know your work and how you like it printed.  For me that is Ron, and if you find someone else, that is fine too.  But if you want to save a bit of time and take my recommendation, I think you will be happy.

Nearly three thousand kilometers of railroad tracks crisscross the delta lowlands of Bangladesh, connecting the capital, Dhaka, with Chittagong to the southeast and Calcutta to the southwest.  The system was built largely by the British and began operations in 1862, more than a hundred years before Bangladesh became an independent nation. Bangladeshi rolling stock now carries more than forty million passengers a year in three ticketed classes: air-conditioned, first, and second—and then there are the passengers who can’t pay. These riders, many of them daily commuters going to and from work, cling to handles, crouch in doorways, perch on the couplings between cars, and climb onto the roof. 

I live in Dhaka and began riding the rails with my camera in 2006. I wanted to draw attention to the danger the stowaways expose themselves to; gruesome accidents are routine for free riders. There is nothing to hold on to and it is very difficult to keep your footing. On a recent ride, I spoke to Majed Miya, a carpenter who has traveled on the roof for two decades. Miya said he enjoys riding on the roof: “no one really disturbs me there, except the fear of death.”
