Lectures

  • Public Presentations and Lectures
    Zoriah has begun to devote a portion of each year to lecturing and presenting to universities, institutions and at political events. For universities, a typical itinerary consists of two days of presentations to multiple departments followed by a public, multi-departmental lecture. The presentations can be tailored in length and subject matter to each department and the multidepartmental lecture currently consist of a thirty minute slideshow showcasing recent work from Iraq, Afghanistan, Lebanon, Palestine, the Asian Earthquake and the Tsunami. The lecture touches on many subjects including the art of visual storytelling, the current state of the media and my own thoughts on documenting life in conflict. Lectures can be tailored to the need of each individual organization, university or event.

    Fossil Fuel Impact. Document car culture and its effects on the environment in one of the worlds most polluted cites, Mexico City.

    Child Drug Addicts. Photograph the lives of children addicted to inhalants.

Slum Life - Kampala, Uganda

I am finishing up my second week here in Uganda with one more to go.  Most of my work is focused around the lives of children in the slums here.  What they go through on a daily basis is quite disturbing, even to someone who has a fairly high tolerance for disturbing things.  I will bring those images to the blog in a few weeks as a feature story.  For now, here is a shot I took yesterday and just finished editing.

Uganda - Week One

I have just finished up my first week here in Uganda.  It is a bit warmer here than it was in northern Europe, which takes a bit of adjusting too.  I have two more weeks here, working on stories relating to the lives and struggles of women and children.  I am also, partly to fend off boredom, shooting part of this project with a $70 point and shoot digital camera I bought during my last trip to the states.  I get so many questions about what kind of equipment is best to use for photojournalism, and although I always tell people that anything will do and that they should just get out there and shoot, I realize it does not cary much weight coming from someone using professional gear.  So, it is going to be interesting to see what happens when I try to use the absolute worst possible camera for photojournalism.   I look forward to posting those images and hopefully I will not end up eating my own words!
