A jobs website called CareerCast.com that ranks different careers, has just put out their annual list of the best and worst jobs. I got a hearty laugh when I found out that that in their list of 200 jobs, there are only 12 that are considered worse than photojournalism! Ha! That's right, photojournalist was ranked at 188 in their list which takes into account things such as stress, environment, hiring outlook etc.
As a matter of fact, nearly every job I photograph people doing around the world is considered to be better than the job I am doing! Dishwasher even came in one spot better than photojournalist...and they have a MUCH longer life expectancy!
Here are just a few of the jobs you might want to consider instead of photojournalism:
Garbage Collector, Janitor, Sewage Plant Operator, Maid, Tax Preparer, Waiter/Waitress, Butcher, Automobile Assembler, Tailor, Cashier, Construction Worker, Carpet Installer, Bus Driver, Welder, Bartender, Sheet Metal Worker, Drill Press Operator, Retail Salesperson, Truck Driver, Clergy, Forklift Operator, Iron worker, Hair Stylist, Plumber
All of that being said, being a photojournalist has allowed me to work in nearly 100 countries. I have met incredible people and had incredible experiences that would not be possible with any of the other jobs on this list. Yes, it has been a struggle at times, physically, emotionally and financially, but that's part of it. Most things in life that are worth having are difficult :)
