On Thursday, June 26th, I witnessed the immediate aftermath of an Al-Qaeda suicide bomb attack. Several dozen people lost their lives... children, old men, civilians, police, and military men. The scene was horrific beyond words, even for someone like me who has a fairly high threshold for such things.
I found it nearly impossible to look through the viewfinder. What I saw was abhorently graphic, yet far too important for the world to ignore. I present images that provide an uncensored view of a terrible event, and some small measure of dignity to those who lost their lives.
WARNING: The images that follow are very graphic and include images of death.
We are on a patrol in an outlying suburb, or slum area of Fallujah. It has been home to many violent attacks recently. We are searching homes for weapons and information regarding Al Qaeda in Iraq, when a message comes over the radio. “We have one killed in actions (KIA), and two wounded in action (WIA)… stand by.”
The soldiers begin to talk amongst themselves when a commander runs in. “Let's move… NOW! LETS MOVE!!!!”
We grab our gear, throwing on our body armor, Kevlar helmets, gloves, goggles, and other proactive gear as we run out of the house.

We jog down the street as the soldiers aim their weapons at moving cars, screaming for them to stop.
I have nearly 70lbs. (31kg.) of equipment strapped to my body and, although I am in good physical shape, I feel the heat burning my lungs every time I inhale. We see people running down the street in panic.

The soldier who is running next to me glances onto the pavement at the same time as I do. There is an ear on the ground. About five feet away, we see a chunk of scalp with hair on a palm sized piece of skull. We look at each other, realizing that we are walking into true madness …and this is just the beginning.

Turning the corner off the main street towards the entrance to the building we walk into a staging for the dead and watch as Iraqi’s carry the bodies and parts of bodies out of the doors in sheets, often slipping on the blood that is covering the tile stairs.

Another dirt parking lot houses growing number of bodies.

We walk through the front door of the building and into nightmarish scene. The courtyard is filled with bodies and limbs. An elderly man is sitting dead in a plastic lawn chair directly in the center of the commotion as if asleep during an afternoon nap.

There are dying people strewn around like limp dolls along with lifeless bodies of all ages. People are screaming and crying running as if they have something important they have to do, only they can’t figure out what that important thing could possibly be. The air smells of burnt flesh and sweat is pouring off of my body. My lungs are still on fire from the run and I have to concentrate to see through the sweat coating my ballistic goggles and dust on my camera’s viewfinder.

I continue shooting pictures as fast as I can. I know the soldiers do not want me in the building photographing their dead friends. I also know that, in case of a secondary blast, my time to document the scene will be extremely limited. It seems like the building is packed with bodies and people are literally frantic removing the dead, as if their pace may bring some of them back.

I turn around and face the courtyard and notice an Iraqi soldier who was obviously in such a state of shock he could barely function.

I aim my camera one more time to snap a shot of some of the dead American Marines, before being told by one of the soldiers that they are under orders to remove me from the scene.

They claim it is for my own safety and take me out to one of the armored vehicles. I watch out the window as U.S. soldiers collect body parts from the street and place them in a tarp.

After a total of not more than five or ten minutes with my camera out, my chance to take photos was gone. Whatever I was able to capture in that chaos will be the only photographic documentation of this event.

Journalism is a business usually driven by sales or support to a certain cause or agenda. Whether Zoriah's photos fall into either category, I don't presume to know.
I do know that there have been dozens of statements posted on this site that reflect utter ignorance. To paraphrase a few and give a little insight...
- The US military just doesn't want people to know "what is really happening in Iraq" (The military wants people to know what is really happening - most is very positive)
- This kind of coverage shows the true state of things in Iraq. (If it did, it would be coverage of new and/or improved schools, hospitals, women's centers, power plants, fuel distribution centers, government, etc.)
- Military members and Iraqis are dying so the US can control Iraqi oil (The US has not assumed control of Iraqi oil - do a little research)
- The public needs to see these images so they get angry and get our troops out of Iraq (We'll be out soon enough because we are succeeding - do a little more research, or come visit Anbar province)
Before you criticize the Marines for their response in the wake of this incident, think about walking down the street with your brother, sister, mother, father, wife, husband or child... someone steps out and shoots them in the head and runs off. Would you stand by while a TV van pulls up and a reporter starts getting images of your loved on dead on the street? You think people need to see your sibling, spouse or parent lying there with a destroyed face and skull to understand that there is random violence like this that sometimes occurs in our cities? Marines are family.
What if the lieutenant colonel's family did not want any image of him posted for the public to see... did Zoriah ask them? Or do they even matter? Are you justified in posting images without family consideration? If so, what led you to decide that your opinions and beliefs should supercede the well-being and wishes of those who knew these Marines best and cared for them more than you ever could?
Are you so self righteous that you believe you know what is best for others?
The simple act of stating "facts" about a situation you don't have direct, first-hand experience with, whether it's the environment and status of things in Iraq or what people need to see or how they feel, displays profound arrogance and ignorance.

The concept of freedom of the press is an idea that most of the world cannot wrap their head around. You have shown both that our country is tolerant of your actions and my brothers have also shown you that just because you CAN show dead marines, doesn't mean you should show dead marines.
You have educated many on the pluralism of our society and also how far "journalists" will fight to remove the morality of your profession to gain a sensationalistic advantage.
Why don't you post the slew of positive things that they were doing day-to-day. Or is that not worth the battery drain on your camera?
Terrorists killed marines that day in the name of their GOD, and you, sir removed GOD to show killed marines. May you live with that for the rest of your life.

- American society is really lost and blind if it is necesary to show these images in order to notice the disaster of Irak.

Everyone should be forced to watch what war actually looks like, instead of simply sweeping this under the rug. I commend you for your efforts to bring this to our attention.

Thank you for showing what 400 million inhabitants want to ignore. From the Argentina my strong hug for you. That is the anger of an American, the one that is fair and it doesn't escape to the pain to create a reality but similar to the life that also includes pain and death. I hope the people of the United States understands that the pain is universal when somebody acts with so much impunity.
Please excuses my writing, in English is not good.

Nothing disrespectfull showing what risk these soldiers take every day being out there, knowing what might await them every day by chance. False respect it would be not to show that. To wrap their loss in a sterile number, making it even smaller by calling it a "non-civilian" loss maybe. A life is a life, soldier or civilian. Only children stand above all.

You are a motherfucker for putting these pictures of dead US soldiers. Maybe this will be posted, maybe not but you will at least be able to see it. Fuck you. You are nothing but a typical America hating liberal

Thank you for being an honest photographer and journalist. If only these images would come to mind of most Americans when they heard the word "WAR"... maybe that would be the end of war.

Your pics are the perfect example of what Kant and other thinkers of the eighteenth century defined as sublime power...something that cannot be rationalized...thank you for putting the American public, or part of it, through the sublime power of war...

The US soldiers should be thankful that they do not have to carry the burden to carry these pictures in their heads all by themselves.
The amount of dumbness in trying to drive reporters like you away from war scenes is astonishing.

@Stillcool: If you know all this shit why don't you fight against the corrupt politicians? Do you like to be like lambs in the slaughterhouse?
Big thanks to zoriah for showing this pictures and it is a shame that they don't let you do your job and show the real terror! Lets stop war and make love!

To view these photos and say "see how ugly war is....we should never resort to war" is naive. Sometimes good people have to battle bad people. "All that is necessary for evil to triumph is for good men to do nothing." As a nation, we are confronting evil. The good people of Afghanistan and Iraq are now free of tyranny. Showing the graphic nature of war should not deter us from standing up against evil. In fact, it should strengthen our resolve to ensure peace and freedom prevails.

You are truly brave.
You have stirred hope in me that the Fourth Estate will live up to "its explicit capacity of advocacy and in its implicit ability to frame political issues."
We need journalist like you to remind us that complacency is what evil men thrive on.

I have seen war first hand and all the people who have disagreed with what america is doing over in Iraq are wrong. I have seen the young children who only want to get away from the terrorists and problems that have been so maliciously laid upon their land, What have you seen? What was your worst day? None of you know anything about war so just shut the fuck up. People don't want to see these pictures because it reminds them that there is a war going on that everyone started. Did you want to retaliate after 9/11? Didn't you wish you could kill every person you saw on the news burning our american flag? You are the one who is wrong because you did nothing to stop this madness, my brothers and I who come from all over the world to fight the people who want nothing more than to come into your homes and kill your families, have stood up and said "Fuck This" and just because you don't agree with the president doesn't mean that you should disagree with us. I have a job, you have a job as well, my job is to make sure that you can do your job by making America safe so you can get in your car and get to work without having to worry about a suicide bomb killing you or an improvised explosive device on the side of the road killing many. Did you wake up this morning? Kiss your kids as they went off to a safe school? Eat a breakfast that is fresh? Take a shower? Your Welcome from all the Military members out there that you don't give two shits about. Remember that we are not killers only men and women, young kids who have decided to give our lives for somehting that means more to us than your hatred and greed and stuck up society, we give our lives for a better world. One that our childrens children can walk through and know that this war is necessary, you do not see it now but it is necessary, think if we did not have this war.... in 50 years where would we be? Oh wait, thats right you won't be alive so what do you care? I care and that is why I will die for all of you selfish fucks who only care about one thing.. Yourselves!

You tink this man is doinng u a favor by showing you these pictures? He's not. You can sit here and say that the truth is better than a lie, but in times like these we need something to comfort our childern. We lie about the war so people don't live in fear. You think these pictures will show you what it is like over there but they don't. Protest all you want but things aren't going to get better no matter what we do.
Posted by: Joseph | September 24, 2008 at 21:41
War! With out it we would not exist.Would you have protested the war for independance? What makes war so bad? Would you rather see pictures of starving childern because the world is over populated? It's part of life! We have to fight! It's in are blood. If you thnk you are doig the right thing by protesting the war then your wrong. People that are for the war are wrong too! We have to accept the inevitable! People die. Women. Chldern.Men. the elderly. the pregnant. everybody. I know its ard to understand and if you think thati am a soulless man then your wrong but sometimes we cant say we have seen a war through pictures or tv. Some part of me believes that this war is helping. George bush is not the greatest president but he is doing his best. Protesting is a hypocrit way to get peace. Why dont you start a ca food drive to feed the starving or collect clothes for the people over there. Why dont you show you care instead of acting like it. Its not going to get better if you sit back and disagree with everything our government does.

My son who is a US Marine, was there on that fateful day. He survived, Thank You God. He called me the following day telling me it was bad ma, really bad. I have to admit, as a mom of a Marine, I honestly wouldn't want my child's body displayed for the world to see. He has done everything for his country, maybe his country can at least protect him when he and/or his fellow brothers and sisters are at their most vulnerable. It seems the only true reason the pictures were published is for the "bottom line" . . . money. It'a shame really. I think exploiting our Military while they were at their most vulnerable, is deplorable.

This is War. This is what really happens. At least we can say we knew, these events won't go ignored.
Ignorance is an ugly thing. So is war.
As Walter Benjamin, a Berlin Jew who took his life while fleeing the Nazi's, remarked before world war two:
"Doesn't the photographer have the obligation to expose the guilty with his photos?"
Keep photographing it. Don't let it go unnoticed.

Like you Zoriah I too believe that the true raw images of war, especially Iraq, need to be show. Not only does it give a true sense of what is happening over there, but it will preserve the incident for history.
I am a Marine, served three tours in Iraq. After 13+ years serving the nation in the Corps I am feeling it is time to hang it up. I long to do what you are doing and getting the true images of the world happenings to those who can't see it first hand.

This is pure, unadulterated honesty. This happens on the streets every other day in Iraq, and people in the West have no idea the horrors faced by the Iraqi people and our fighting personnel. Maybe if we had more people exposing what the Iraq was is truly like, we might not be fighting this war in the first place. I assume that's why the soldiers had the journalist removed. The pentagon has figured out that if your population sees and realizes how terrible war is, they won't support a war. Therefore it is in there best interest to fight a war and control the media.

You have so much bravery to be able to take these horrific photographs. These photographs are what outside spectators neglecting the brutal and gruesome events taking place in Iraq need to see. They truly capture the struggling lives of Iraqis and America's brave soldiers. You have unveiled the truth that the ignorant, who feed upon the romanticized idealism of war, attempt to avoid. If only these images were what the public were forced to be exposed to everyday as the soldiers and Iraqis are forced to experience them.

been broken, burnt, disfigured, dismembered and it sound a bit strung up. How I impressed with the writer showing courage to take this picture. Also Zoriah was very talented as a photographer.
Stop the war! It's time to pray
Posted by: Account Deleted | March 19, 2009 at 09:30
I can't even imagine the horrors you have witnessed Zoriah. I completely disagree with the dissenters on your blog who feel that you should not be posting such horrific photos on your site. When the mainstream media and government glosses over the U.S. losses in situations like these then that is removes the emotional connection from the equation. It is much easier to believe that war is a valid solution to solve conflicts if you haven't been exposed to how bad it is for everyone.
When photos are posted in the mainstream media of deceased Iraq's, Sudanese, etc... why isn't the outrage on the same level as when deceased American soldiers are depicted? Let's not kid ourselves. There is a lot of sick shit going on in this world.

I heard lyrics to a song once, it was written about 2 American marines who died brutally after being kidnapped in Iraq...their ages if I remember correctly were 21 and 25...the chorus struck me...here are the lyrics...
"this is the face, of war, not some political debate, not some article you read in the paper, or some opinion that you have weighed
.... its bombs in your bed, its blood at your feet, its fighting for friends with a corpse at your feet, its fear in a bag, its love and its hate, its satan himself, opening the gates"
I think you did a great job in being honest with what you have witnessed. That is real and honest photojournalism. If there is a God, especially if there is a Christ, it would undoubtedly weep at the tragic fact that barbarianism like this (and not only in this war, but in so many places) still exists. Its important that people like you make distant and unaffected people like us look in the true face of war.

Disgusting scene, but it is what it is. Thanks for being a real Journalist. It is of the utmost importance that we know, and see the truth. Propaganda, lies, and sugarcoated half truths have no place in an informed democratic society. Too much of our "informational" sources and media outlets are suspicious, fictitious, and lack all credibility. The only outlet for the raw, unadultarated truth these days is the internet. 2 Thumbs up for defiant journalist, the internet, and the infowar.
Posted by: ert4 | September 05, 2009 at 04:03
I remember being with 2/3 G Company when this happened. I was at the Sitcher IP station and we spent a solid week searching for any clues as to how this was planned or executed. A good friend of mine from Pennsylvania lost his friend(Sergeant JP) in the blast. Since then my whole generation has got out of the Corps and worked on continuing our own lives. Some of us went back to Afghanistan for more.
It initially pissed me off that such things were able to be seen by Joe Blow back here in the US as he pleased. But over time it occurred to me that this is part of the reason nobody really understands what we go through over there. Because they don't -see- it. People don't understand things they've not seen or heard or been through to some degree. We can talk about it all we want but until it's brought to people and put right in their face they just won't understand.
I am no longer upset about anything that happens on this website. You deserve at least as much credit as the armed members you stand next to. I personally thank you for bringing this event to America's front door.

REALITY sucks but it's there... as these photos show
So many marine lives and innocent Iraqi lives wasted, lost in such horrific ways...
No matter what anyone says, the world knows this was an ILLEGAL war. The US should have never sent their men who sadly delivered under such false pretences and notions, that this is being done under the banner of 'freedom' for Iraqis. It is confirmed Iraq had NOTHING to do with 9/11 or Osama. Nor was it a threat to the western world. It was percieved to be a threat to Israel, for no other reason other than Iraq is an Islamic nation. Oh and not forgetting the main prize which Iraq harboured and the invaders had their eye on: Black Gold.
It needs to end. So does the belief and practice by US govt. that it has the right to go policing the world when ever it wants, whilst at same time depriving it's own people of the truth, resources, wasted lives, broken hearts and loss of respect for humannity.
It should NEVER have happened. Soldiers would be alive today and iraqi lives saved from the hell they have been seeing for so long.
Posted by: A wanderer | December 02, 2009 at 14:57
As someone who has been to Iraq twice, and seen many horrors, I firmly believe that these pictures should not be displayed in this manner. The Marines in these pictures should be given a little more dignity, then having their pictures thrown on a "photo journal" to further the appeal of one said persons political agenda. I for one, would not want a picture of my dead body to be displayed on the internet as some kind of wake up call. If you want a wake up call, then turn on the news and look at the statistics. It is not that hard to figure out with death tolls staggering in the thousands, that it is a horrific scene. If you would like to see horrible scenes like this, then go enlist and serve your country! How would you feel to have the picture of your dead son/daughter plastered all over the internet. I know this is a great "motivater" to make Americans complain even more then they already do, but these are real people! Think about it! Cudos Maj Dent!

May you rot in hell for preserving this memory for the family and friends of these men. A child should never have to find something like this when searching the internet for their father. Nothing you have done has indicated anything other than your acted to promote your own personal agenda.
Three days? Those pictures are just as horrible a year and a half later, but three days? I suppose that was out of respect for the families?? Three days to grieve before being hitting them with this.
Did you attempt to forewarn the families that you would be posting these photos of their loved ones?
Unidentifiable? You honestly believed that these photos would would make the men unidentifiable to the family??
For those that state these photos honor the dead, your personal opinion does not apply to these men. Did anyone ask the families that knew these men in life if they would feel honored in death with these photos?
For those of you that "needed" to see these photos to know the horror and tragedy of war - you are idiots. Seriously, you thought war was a slumber party and needed to see these photos exploiting the dead woke you up. No wonder Americans are thought of as naive and childlike. So, the families of these men are to suffer for your stupidity...
As for the photography, where are the photos of the positive things being accomplished there? You were embedded to report on the area, yet declined to attend a meeting with the tribal sheiks and community leaders taking a stand for their freedom? Too boring for you, I imagine. Sounds to me you were looking for something to profit from and you found it.
As I said, rot in hell.

I know you're trying to get the reality of war out to the public, and give them a glimpse of what Hell is like. The photographs are amazing, it truly does get the image across, but I just don't agree with the dead Marines being photographed and placed in a public venue. The second picture of the Marines even allowed you to see the dismembered face of one of them. Personally I disagree with that 100%. Those brave men who lost their lives that day do not need to have their pictures floating around the internet for God and country to see. The general public may not know who they are and they may not care, but some do and I find it grossly disrespectful.

But hey man....... good job on putting pictures of dead marines and good iraqi people on the internet. i hope someone gets to see their HUSBAND , SON, BROTHER, FAMILY MEMBERS face blown up... I am a family member of an American soldier killed that day. I am sure your picture of those men lying dead is him. Its more painful today than it was 2 years ago to see these images. Politics aside, we miss our Soldier.

Children often have a way of coming up with a name for the baby. I think it makes them feel a part of the whole scene. A niece begged me to name my first daughter Big Bird. A friend's daughter choose broccoli for the new baby. It's cute in utero, but allowing it to continue will only result in your child being named Billy Boo boo Belly - or Boo Boo for short!

A bit disturbing I will admit but the question remains
Why can't we all just get along?
Seriously when are these cowardly acts going to end?

To make informed decisions about war, we need to see the reality of the situation. That means using color for photos of the dead. Black and White filters out their humanity and disfigures their appearance to the point of looking inhuman. It is not artistic. It is cliche and fake.
Censorship is a crime against creation.

People especialy American People need to View this!! In my eyes its as if Us as Americans should take a step back and realize what we are doin to ourselves. War isnt a pretty sight. Specialy war that isnt with any true meaning cept for control of natural recourses and politics. I understand the terrorism need to be met with a swift reply, but in the long run its a never ending trend. The End is here and we are all at the hands of the Lord when final judgment is upon us. WAKE UP AMERICA!! We have become not what we say we stand for.. We have become what we say we stand to defeat!! Our own enemies are our own Gov, and ourselves. To all the Brave Men And Women of our Armed services Theres nothin I nor we can say or do to repay you for what yall do for us! My payers are with you!! To the Warriors Who dont and will never make it home My prayers are also with you!!

Hello, I don't mean to be a party pooper or anything but out of respect for the families of the Marine Corps could you please remove pictures of dead American Marines. My father is a Marine and I can tell you that families would not appreciate having the faces of their dead family member on the internet. Again, I don't mean to be a party pooper but out of respect, not because I don't agree. I respect your work and appreciate you going out there and recording the reality of the war.

NEW YORK Jets linebacker Quinton Coples, New York's sacks leader last season as a rookie, is out indefinitely with an ankle injury that will require surgery. The jets announced sunday night that coples, injured in the team's 37-13 preseason win over the Jacksonville Jaguars on Saturday night, will have a"Medical procedure"On his right ankle tuesday and will miss the remainder of the preseason. The team did not announce the nature of the injury, but it is believed to be a hairline fracture. That could keep him out for at least the regular-Season opener at home against tampa bay on sept.8.Coples was hurt late in the second quarter when he batted down a pass by chad henne and landed awkwardly.
KANSAS CITY, Mo.Pro bowl running back jamaal charles returned to chiefs practice with no hesitation sunday despite a lingering right foot strain that caused soreness to travel halfway up his leg.Charles spoke to reporters before hitting the practice field for the first time since last monday, when he stepped on a teammate during the workout. He missed last friday night's preseason game against san francisco and his status for next weekend's game at pittsburgh is undecided.
Asked if he thought it both instances were deliberate, Manager Davey Johnson shook his head:I hope not because it s ridiculous in a close ballgame. And they ve got a lot more to lose than we do at this point. So it would be best nfl jerseys a ridiculous thing to be doing.

Holloman made a nice diving interception off of Drew Stanton late in the first half to keep Arizona out of the endzone. That s holloman s second interception this preseason. The first came during the hall of fame game on a 75-Yard pick returned for a touchdown.
Bell said it was an aggravation of the same setback that kept him out of last Saturday's preseason home opener against the New York Giants, though not as serious.Tomlin called the decision to sit bell precautionary after he injured his knee and was held out or limited in several other practices during the week leading to the game.
SAN DIEGO(Ap)Chargers wide receiver eddie royal was taken off a practice field in an ambulance after landing hard on his back after making a catch in practice saturday. The team said he has a bruised lung and was being evaluated for a concussion. The latest injury to the wide receiving corps was the scariest. After landing hard, royal walked to an adjoining field, where he dropped to the ground and began receiving treatment from the team's medical staff. It appeared he was given oxygen, and also that he spit up a small amount of blood.A few teammates came over to check on him, including quarterback philip rivers and fellow wideout robert meachem.``I think like anything, when you're getting carried off like that you're scared, '' Rivers said.``You hope for the best. You hate to ever see a teammate like that get carried off.'' Rookie coach Mike McCoy came over and had a look before returning cheap nike nfl jerseys free shipping to the other field. An ambulance was driven onto the field and royal was sitting up on the stretcher as he was loaded inside.``He had a little bit of a hard time breathing, '' McCoy said.``We're going to take him to the hospital and check him out. That's all i've got right now.I can't tell you anymore.I don't know a whole lot about it.'' The injury happened in the last team drill of the day.``All you can do is pray for him, because we don't know, '' fellow wideout Robert Meachem said.``Unfortunately, it was a bad fall.``It's always scary, '' Meachem said.``This game is a violent game. And in this game, injuries can come and go.'' Meachem said all the receivers gathered after practice and said a prayer for Royal, Danario Alexander and Malcom Floyd.Alexander is out for the season after tearing the anterior cruciate ligament in his right knee on aug.6.He had surgery thursday.Floyd strained his right knee on monday. Both were hurt after colliding with cornerback shareece wright.``He landed hard, '' Rivers said about Royal ``Hopefully, he's all right.Anytime you get carried off the field, it's not anything too, too minor.Hopefully, it's just a precaution.Hopefully, we'll get him back; Most importantly get him feeling good and healthy.'' Also Saturday, McCoy said defensive end Corey Liuget has a strained shoulder, but refused to give the severity or say how long he might be out.He was hurt in the first quarter of thursday night's exhibition loss at chicago.``It's just a strain.I'm not a doctor so i can't tell you all that, '' the rookie coach said.Rookie linebacker manti te'o was still wearing a walking boot on his right foot, which he hurt in the exhibition opener against seattle on aug.8.Te'o said it felt ``way better than it's felt since last week.I'm making great strides.'' Te'o said he doesn't know when he'll be back at practice.
